\nThe Observatory for Violations of Freedom of Expression and Opinion issued a summary of violations of freedom of opinion during May 2024. During this period, Tunisia has witnessed a rise in opinion trials, targeting a number of citizens from different groups, including activists, journalists, lawyers unionists, for expressing their opinion by publishing posts on social media or media statements. This summary refers to a number of long-standing violations of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, which targeted in particular all the critical and opposition voices to the current regime and its policies in many areas. The Observatory for Violations of Freedom of Expression and Opinion monitored 10 cases of violations ranging from arbitrary arrests to summons for investigation and prosecution, most notably on the meaning of Decree No. 54 in particular and other legal texts restricting freedom of expression. This summary was also subjected to a number of violations threatening the return of the State’s prior control over freedoms and undermining the right to freedom of opinion and expression. The right, which is one of the most important gains of the Tunisian people following the 17 December\/ 14 January revolution, is now threatened by the Authority’s abuses, harassment and legislation contrary to international and regional conventions guaranteeing this right.
