Intersection for Rights and Freedoms Association strongly condemns the neglect young doctors are facing from supervisory authorities, as well as threats and intimidation tactics aimed at silencing their voices and discouraging them from continuing their rightful and legitimate efforts to defend their rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Young doctors have launched a series of protest movements, beginning on April 21, 2025, followed by a strike and protest march on May 2, and a five-day strike in June. These actions are a response to the authorities\u2019 continued indifference to several key demands, including exemption from mandatory civil service, revision of the unfair pay structure and excessive night duty hours, and an increase in the monthly stipend in line with the nature of their work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the legitimacy of these demands, the supervising authorities at the Ministry of Health chose to escalate the situation through a series of punitive measures. These included arbitrarily changing internship placements, deducting the wages of striking doctors, and threatening some department heads with non-validation of internships.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The escalation has also taken a legal turn, with threats of prosecution made during a negotiation session held on June 30, 2025, between the Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors and a ministerial delegation led by the Minister of Social Affairs, mandated by the Prime Minister. At the session, the head of the organization stated that they were threatened with legal action if protests continued, and that the authorities showed no concern over the potential emigration of doctors. This reflects a disturbing shift in state policy from managing a social dispute to repressing and criminalizing union activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In light of this, the Intersection for Rights and Freedoms Association considers these practices a blatant violation of the rights to freedom of expression, organization, and peaceful protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The association emphasises that the protests led by young doctors, in all their forms, are legitimate rights protected by international conventions and treaties, as well as by the Constitution of the Republic of Tunisia, which guarantees the right to strike in Article 41: \u201cThe right to unionize, including the right to strike, is guaranteed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Furthermore, the Association believes these demands extend beyond sector-specific grievances to encompass a broader fundamental right: the right to health. This right includes not only access to care, but also the guarantee of safe and dignified working conditions for all health sector workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Therefore, the association calls on the supervising authorities to immediately stop all forms of threat and intimidation against young doctors and their union representatives, withdraw threats that criminalize union work, and seriously engage with their legitimate demands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Finally, the Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms urges all components of civil society to support young doctors in their fight for their rights. It also asserts that defending the rights of medical and paramedical staff is not merely a professional concern but a vital foundation for building an equitable and sustainable healthcare system that ensures every citizen\u2019s right to health.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
