The decision came after they appeared before the court today, Wednesday, 17 June 2026, to contest the judgment issued against them in absentia, which sentenced them to one year in prison. The case also includes an eight-month prison sentence against those who provided the sit-in tent, on charges of obstructing the freedom to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objection hearing was held on 18 March 2026, during which the court accepted the objection in form and postponed the case to the current hearing date. This followed the issuance of wanted notices against them in late 2025, despite the fact that the judgment in absentia had been issued on 8 March 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case dates back to a complaint filed in 2020 by the Tunisian Chemical Group in Gab\u00e8s, claiming harm as a result of the participation of environmental activist and \u201cStop Pollution\u201d campaign member Khayreddine Debaya, alongside a number of local activists, in a peaceful sit-in demanding the dismantling of the polluting units of the chemical complex. At the time, the protesters raised urgent social and development demands, foremost among them the right to fair and alternative development, the protection of the rights to health and employment, and an end to pollution in order to address the severe environmental crisis that the region has endured for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this context, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms affirms its firm and unconditional solidarity with Khayreddine Debaya and with all environmental activists who are being prosecuted for exercising their right, guaranteed under national law and international standards, to peaceful protest in support of legitimate environmental and social demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms reiterates the need to guarantee civil rights, end prosecutions that expose activists to imprisonment, respect fair trial standards, and stop using judicial bodies and legal provisions to intimidate defenders of environmental rights. The Association also condemns the continued response to popular demands through punitive security-based approaches that undermine the right to demonstrate and protest peacefully and further restrict public space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms affirms that the continued prosecution of activists represents a systematic erosion of the remaining human rights gains and reflects a dangerous retreat from the rule of law, democratic principles, and the freedom to protest peacefully.
