Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms received, with deep sorrow, the news of a truck overturning while transporting women agricultural workers in the El Brij area of the Mezzouna delegation, Sidi Bouzid Governorate, on the morning of Friday, 12 June 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tragic incident affected 13 women agricultural workers and resulted in the deaths of feminist activists Braniya Kafaya and Rabah Chouabnia, while several others, including schoolgirls, sustained injuries of varying severity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intersection Association mourns the two deceased women and extends its heartfelt condolences to their families and to all those who knew them. The Association wishes them patience and strength in this painful moment, and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured.<\/span><\/p>\n

These incidents recur every year, particularly with the start of the agricultural season, as reports of so-called \u201cdeath trucks\u201d once again emerge. This name has become inseparable from the reality faced by women agricultural workers, who continue to endure daily marginalization while being transported in trucks that are not designed to carry passengers. This constitutes a flagrant breach of safety standards and reflects the State\u2019s failure to fulfil its protective obligations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the absence of safe transport, and amid repeated disregard for their precarious conditions, the State continues to offer little more than empty, performative rhetoric, exposing its persistent failure to provide an effective alternative in a marginalized agricultural sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

The late Braniya Kafaya and Rabah Chouabnia paid with their lives as a direct result of State negligence and the political denial of their rights. These rights are guaranteed under the Constitution and international law, yet remain absent from their lived reality. This denial lies at the root of their deaths and of the injuries sustained by their fellow workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responsibility for these disasters lies squarely with negligent public policies that treat women agricultural workers as cheap labour rather than as citizens entitled to life, bodily integrity, and safe transport.<\/span><\/p>\n

The continued loss of life among women agricultural workers exposes the depth of the social and regional inequalities endured by women in rural areas. It also confirms the urgent need to review public policies related to transport, work, and social protection, moving beyond temporary responses and expressions of regret after each tragedy.<\/span><\/p>\n
