Today, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms begins its activities to promote the concept and practice of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Arab countries. This involves research, field work, documentation and reporting. Intersection also aims to develop public policies, laws and practices consistent with international conventions and treaties on human rights and democratic governance.
The launch of the Intersection Association coincides with the tenth anniversary of the Arab Spring revolutions, which called for democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights in many Arab countries. Nevertheless, the people of these states continue to suffer authoritarianism, violent extremism and human rights violations. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the weakness of the health system and the lack of transparency and information flow in the Arab world, these governments have repressed anyone who has criticized their policies in the face of the crisis.
In response to these crises, the Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms was created in Tunisia by a group of young Arab researchers and human rights activists interested in monitoring and denouncing the corruption of the authorities, violations of the rights of citizens and violations of their freedoms. The Intersection Association also seeks to provide relevant policy makers and civil society organizations with analytical studies and research to support sound policy initiatives that support the development and promotion of good governance and human rights in Arab countries.
The Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms begins its activities in two countries where the results of their 2011 revolutions have varied, namely Egypt and Tunisia. The association aims to use technology and artificial intelligence to spread a culture of human rights and support democracy and the rule of law. It also supports the rights of women and the LGBTIQ+ community to end gender-based violations, violence and discrimination. In addition, Intersection aims to make the Internet accessible to all its citizens with good quality, without censorship, and especially censorship that can undermine their right to freedom of opinion and expression. And also, support vulnerable human rights defenders, promote education based on a culture of human rights and resist all forms of violent extremism and provide effective solutions to combat them. Intersection will promote and defend the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, and promote their integration into host communities.
