On 6th March, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms, and EuroMed Rights- Tunis. issued a report entitled “Prison, Extortion and Threat: The Price of Women’s Participation in Public Space.”
The report highlights the violations which have been imposed on female activists and those interested in public affairs, notably recently, since July 2021.
Mohammed Boughalleb
Tunisia, March 22, 2024 Journalist “Mohamed Boughaleb” has been arrested and taken to the headquarters of the Fifth Central Brigade at the National Guard barracks in El Ouina, according to what his lawyer reported to media sources. It is noted that journalist “Mohamed Boughaleb” received a summons on March 20, 2024 to appear before the Fifth Brigade in El Ouina as a suspect based on his journalistic work, which in turn refused today to receive a notice from the prosecutor’s office for Mohamed Boughaleb’s lawyer and a medical certificate for him. Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms expresses its full and unconditional support for journalist “Mohamed Boughaleb”. It also calls for his immediate and unconditional release. Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms condemns the recent wave of arrests and restrictions targeting journalists in an organized manner. These measures violate the very essence of the right to freedom of opinion, expression and the press, a right that the authorities must respect and guarantee. These violations are in complete contradiction with the Tunisian constitution and the international treaties and conventions ratified by Tunisia.
Moncef Amdouni
Moncef Amdouni is a political party employee who has been imprisoned since May 2023 following a case related to the possession of a foreign currency, which date back to 2015. The case was referred to the judiciary and a final verdict was issued, which makes Moncef Amdouni’s imprisonment illegal and a flagrant violation of his rights.
Attorney Abdelaziz Essid’s Trial
On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, attorney Abdelaziz Essid appeared before the Eight Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance in Tunis due to a complaint filed by the current Minister of Justice. This is following charges accusing him of defamation via public communication networks according to Article 86 of the Communications Code, as well as attributing false matters to a public servant per Article 128 of the Penal Code.
