Tunis March 17, 2026
Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms has released its new report, “Under the Weight of Marginalization: A Report on Intersecting Violations Across Regions,” which documents human rights violations across Tunisia from March 2025 to January 2026.
The report records 285 cases covering civil, political, socio-economic, and environmental rights. It emphasizes that these violations are not isolated incidents but part of a recurring pattern that reflects the fragility of protection and accountability mechanisms in the country. The report highlights repeated violations affecting freedom of expression and protest activities, violence and ill-treatment, arbitrary evictions, breaches of fair trial guarantees, health and housing rights, as well as environmental degradation threatening citizens’ health and their right to a safe environment.
In preparing the report, the association relied on diverse sources, including interviews with affected individuals and victims, internal documentation, reports from national and international organizations, and articles from online news websites and radio platforms.
The analysis reveals clear regional disparities: economic and social vulnerability intersects with strict security approaches in interior regions, while civil and political rights violations are concentrated in urban areas. This underscores the gap between constitutional guarantees and international obligations on one hand, and their actual implementation on the other.
The report also provides practical recommendations to executive, judicial, and legislative authorities, including:
-developing an urgent national plan to address regional disparities,
– respecting international standards in managing peaceful protests
– strengthening independent investigations into torture and ill-treatment
– protecting the right to housing
-enhancing fair trial guarantees.
Additionally, it calls for reviewing legislation related to freedom of expression and assembly to ensure alignment with the Constitution and international conventions, as well as activating parliamentary oversight and conducting field visits to the most affected regions.
